Reservations

Reservations are required on all services travelling to or from Warrnambool, Swan Hill, Shepparton, Albury / Wodonga and Bairnsdale, even if you intend to get off the train before it finishes at its destination.

Reservations are not required on trains travelling to or from all other destinations including Marshall, Ararat, Ballarat, Bendigo, Echuca, Seymour and Traralgon.

Checking if your service is reserved

If you are using V/Line timetables, look for the R symbol as circled red in the image below.

If you are using the journey planner, look for ‘reservations required’ in the travel plan as circled red in the image below.

Restriction reservations

Some services on the Swan Hill, Warrnambool and Shepparton lines have a restriction reservation that means you can only make a reservation less than 24 hours before departure.

This is to ensure sufficient room for passengers on less frequent long distance services.

If you are travelling short distances on long distance services, you are encouraged to catch an alternative short distant service as these run more frequently.

The following services require reservations less than 24 hours prior to travelling between the stations listed:

Melbourne – Swan Hill

To Swan Hill:

The 6.17pm Monday to Friday train service between Southern Cross, North Melbourne, Sunbury, Gisborne, Woodend and Kyneton.

Melbourne – Warrnambool

To Southern Cross:

The 5.38am Monday to Friday train service between Marshall, South Geelong, Geelong, North Geelong, Lara, Footscray, North Melbourne and Southern Cross.
To Warrnambool:

The 6.28pm Monday to Friday train service between Southern Cross, North Melbourne, Lara, North Geelong, Geelong, South Geelong and Marshall.

Melbourne – Shepparton

To Southern Cross:

The 6.57am Monday to Friday train service between Seymour, Broadford, Kilmore East, Wandong, Wallan, Broadmeadows, North Melbourne and Southern Cross.

To Shepparton:

The 6.33pm Monday to Friday service between Southern Cross, North Melbourne, Broadmeadows and Seymour.

  • selected Premium Stations - check the station’s stop profile before attending as time restrictions may apply
  • V/Line ticket agents – call 136 196 for locations
