Zones

Public Transport in Metropolitan Melbourne covers two zones, Zone 1 and Zone 2, and includes a zone boundary overlap. Fares are based on the zones in which travel occurs, whether in a single zone or across both zones.

A myki card is used to pay for travel on trains, trams and buses. myki calculates the lowest fare according to which zone(s) you travel in.  For example, if travelling from Southern Cross (Zone 1) to Belgrave (Zone 2), myki will charge a Zone 1+2 fare.

If you travel in a zone boundary overlap, myki will charge for the cheaper zone. For example, if travelling from Sunbury (Zone 2) to Sunshine (Zone 1/2 overlap), myki will charge a Zone 2 fare.

For more information on fares, see Metropolitan myki fares.

View the lists below or see the maps page to find out which zone(s) your service travels through:

Trams

Most tram routes are entirely within Zone 1, however tram routes 75, 86 and 109 extend into the zone boundary overlap.

For trips taken entirely within the Zone 1/2 overlap, you should remember to touch off with your myki to get the cheaper Zone 2 fare.

When you plan a trip using the journey planner your trip plan will tell you which zone/s you will be travelling in.

Free Tram Zone

The Free Tram Zone in Melbourne's CBD was introduced on 1 January 2015, making it easier for commuters and tourists to move around the city. The principal boundaries of the Free Tram Zone are Spring Street, Flinders Street and La Trobe Street. Additionally, the tram routes along Victoria Street, William Street and Elizabeth Street that surround Victoria Market are also included as well as the Docklands area.

Download the Free Tram Zone on the Maps page.

All stops within the zone are clearly marked and tram drivers will make regular announcements when approaching the zone boundaries.  Zone boundaries are signed and free tram zone maps are across the network.

If your tram journey is exclusively within the zone, travel is free, meaning you do not need to touch on with a myki. Customers travelling exclusively in the Free Tram Zone who do touch on will be charged a Zone 1 two hour fare.  To receive a reimbursement you must touch on and touch off on the same tram while in the zone, and call the PTV call centre on 1800 800 007. Customers should allow 24 hours before calling to make sure their trip has registered in the system.

If your journey begins or ends outside of the zone you must touch on with a valid myki when boarding the tram.

For further details on the Free Tram Zone, please see 1 January 2015 fare changes.

Regional trains

mykis are valid for travel by train between metropolitan Melbourne and:

  • Wendouree
  • Eaglehawk/Epsom
  • Seymour
  • Traralgon
  • Waurn Ponds

Customers with a myki pass, who want to travel beyond their pass zone, but still within the myki zone can use myki money for the additional zones.

If customers travel beyond the myki zone boundary and have a myki pass, a V/Line ticket will need to be purchased to cover the journey between the last station in a zone for which the myki pass is valid and their destination.

For more information on fares, see Regional fares.

Further information

More information on bus route zones can be found in the Victorian Fares and Ticketing Manual.

How to calculate Zones travelled

It is easy to calculate the number of zones travelled for trips starting or ending in Zone 1.

For example:
A customer travelling from Bendigo (Zone 13) to Richmond (Zone 1), travels through 13 zones. The customer travels from Zone 13 and ends in Zone 1, thus 13 zones.

However, some journeys may not start or end in Zone 1.

For example:
A customer travelling from Traralgon (Zone 12) to Drouin (Zone 6), travels through 7 zones, as Traralgon and Drouin are on the same line. They have travelled through Zones 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12.

Some customers may travel through Zone 1 to end their journey on a different line.

For example:
A customer travelling from Geelong (Zone 4) to Dandenong (Zone 2), travels through 4 zones. The customer travels from Zone 4, through Zones 3, 2 and 1 and then travels back out to Zone 2. They have travelled through 4 zones, Zone 1, 2, 3, and 4.

The Regional Fares Calculator provides the zones travelled and product time length for a specific journey input.
