Public transport for 2024 Penfolds Derby Day: Saturday 2 November 2024

The 2024 Melbourne Cup Carnival officially kicks off at Flemington Racecourse with Derby Day on Saturday 2 November, with extra services running to get you there and back.

All services will operate to a normal Saturday timetable, with additional services running to get to you and from the races at Flemington.

  • Gates Open: 9.30am
  • First Race: 12.20pm
  • Feature Race: 4.20pm
  • Last Race: 5.40pm

Getting to the Racecourse

Flinders Street Station services will depart from Platforms 8/9 and run express to Flemington Racecourse.

From 1.30pm, services will stop at Southern Cross (Platform 14), and North Melbourne (Platform 6).

  • From 9.15am to 1.30pm, every 6 to 7 minutes
  • From 1.30pm to 3.40pm, every 10 minutes

Southern Cross Station services will depart from Platform 8 stopping at North Melbourne Station and then running express to Flemington Racecourse:

  • From 9.20am to 1:30pm, every 10 minutes

Leaving the Racecourse

Services will depart Flemington Racecourse (Platform 1 and 2) and run express to North Melbourne (Platform 5), Southern Cross (Platform 13) and Flinders Street (Platforms 8/9) stations:

  • From 1.30pm to 4.30pm, every 10 minutes
  • From 4:30pm to 7pm, every 4 minutes
  • From 7pm to 9pm, every 10 minutes

Please note the last train service to depart Flemington Racecourse will be at 9pm from Platform 1.

Footscray Station bus shuttle

Customers for the Sunbury, Werribee and Williamstown lines can catch a one-way shuttle bus from Leonard Crescent (outside Flemington Racecourse Station) express to Footscray Station:

  • From 3.50pm to 8.30pm, every 5 minutes

Getting to and from the Racecourse

From 9am to 9pm, additional services will operate on Route 57a from Elizabeth Street to Epsom Road (Melbourne Showgrounds). These services will operate as a shuttle service and will stop all stops between Stop 1 Flinders St Station and Stop 19 Royal Children’s Hospital, then express to Stop 30 Flemington Racecourse.

Please Note that Tram Stop 33 Melbourne Showgrounds/Union Road will be closed during this event. A temporary Tram Stop 30 Flemington Racecourse will be active from 4.30pm to assist patrons leaving Flemington Racecourse.

Getting to and from the Racecourse

The following bus route travels close to Flemington Racecourse:

  • Route 404 (Footscray - Moonee Ponds via Newmarket)

Getting to the Racecourse

Customers arriving at North Melbourne and Southern Cross stations are advised to change trains and catch a Flemington Racecourse service.

Leaving the Racecourse

Customers are advised to get any train from Flemington Racecourse and alight at Southern Cross or North Melbourne stations and change to a regional train.

Getting to the Racecourse

Customers arriving at Southern Cross Station coach terminal are advised to walk to Platforms 14 and catch a Flemington Racecourse service.

Leaving the Racecourse

Customers can catch any service departing Flemington Racecourse, alight at Southern Cross Station and then walk to the coach terminal.
