Your guide getting to and from the 'G'

Public transport is your best way to enjoy all the thrills of the AFL Grand Final.

We’re running additional train and tram services to get you to the Grand Final Parade on Friday 27 September and the Grand Final on Saturday 28 September.

The Free Tram Zone will be extended from the city to the MCG from first service Wednesday 25 September to last service Saturday 28 September.

The additional stops included in the Extended FreeTram Zone are:

Your best public transport and walking options to and from the MCG:

  • Catch a Mernda or Hurstbridge line train to Jolimont Station for a five-minute walk via Yarra Park to the MCG.
  • Catch a Lilydale, Belgrave, Alamein, Glen Waverley, Pakenham of Frankston line train to Richmond station to walk via Punt Road Oval to the MCG.
  • Tram routes 48/48a travel along Collins Street via Wellington Parade for a five-minute walk to the MCG.
  • Tram routes 75/75a travel along Flinders Street via Wellington Parade for a five-minute walk to the MCG.
  • Tram routes 70/70a travel along Flinders Street via Melbourne Park. You can walk from the tram stop across the footbridge to the MCG.

If you are coming from Southern Cross Station, you can:

  • Catch one of the trains listed above to Jolimont or Richmond Station
  • Catch a Route 70 or 75 tram from Stop 1 on the corner of Spencer and Flinders streets or a Route 48 tram from Stop D14 from the corner of Spencer and Collins Street.

For interstate/international visitors

  • The Skybus leaves every 15 minutes from Melbourne Airport to Southern Cross Station. There are kiosks inside and outside the airport to purchase tickets.
  • Download the free PTV mobile app for Android and iOS and access public transport on the go.
  • myki is your ticket to travel on trains, trams and buses in Melbourne. You can purchase a myki card at Melbourne Airport at T2 and T4, the PTV hub at and at myki retail outlets including 7-Eleven. For Android users Mobile myki is available to download on the Google Wallet app. Find out more about purchasing a myki.
  • If your tram journey starts or finishes outside the Free Tram Zone, make sure you touch on when you board to ensure you have a valid ticket. Tram announcements will tell you when you’re entering and leaving the free tram zone.
  • If you are staying in the city, you can walk to the MCG via the William Barak Bridge which you access from Birrarung Marr near Federation Square.

For people needing mobility assistance

The MCG mobility shuttle service, the G-train will pick you up from Richmond or Jolimont stations.

The service is free and pre-booking is not required.
