Travelling to the city by metropolitan train
For some of the best views of the fireworks and a packed program of entertainment, hop off the train at:
- Parliament Station for the Treasury Gardens celebrations
- Flagstaff or Melbourne Central stations for the Flagstaff Gardens celebrations
- Southern Cross Station for Docklands celebrations
Metropolitan train services on the Sunbury, Craigieburn, Upfield and all lines travelling through Burnley Station after 7pm will go via the City Loop for more direct access to the celebration zones.
Large crowds are expected in the city this New Year’s Eve, be sure to plan ahead.

Travelling home from the city by metropolitan train
- Parliament, Flagstaff and Melbourne Central stations will be open until 3am on New Year’s Eve.
- Flinders Street and Southern Cross stations will be open all night.
- Extra train services will run throughout the night to get you into the city and back home again. Ensure you check when your last service will leave.
- Flinders Street Station is likely to be very busy, consider using Parliament, Melbourne Central or Flagstaff stations instead.
If you’re travelling with a pram or have accessibility needs, Melbourne Central Station and Southern Cross Station are your best options.
We encourage all passengers to travel safely and consider others on your way to and from NYE celebrations in the city.

Travelling on V/Line services
V/Line will run extra train and coach services to get regional passengers to and from New Year’s Eve celebrations in Melbourne’s CBD before and after the celebrations.
Passengers are advised to get off at Southern Cross for Docklands celebrations. For other locations, transfer to a Metro Trains City Loop service.
While V/Line services will depart regularly from Southern Cross Station after the midnight fireworks, the platforms and coach terminal will be busier than usual so please take care and consider others when travelling home.
Post midnight V/Line services
Geelong Line
Services will run at 12.45am, 1am, 1.15am (extra carriages), 1.30am, 1.50am, 2.10am and 2.20am.
Ballarat Line
Services will run at 12.30am, 1.10am, 1.40am and 2.05am.
Bendigo Line
Coaches will be on standby at 1am.
Seymour Line
Additional coaches will be available at 1am.
Traralgon Line
An additional coach will run at 1am.
In addition to the extra coaches that are scheduled to run on some lines, several coaches will be on stand-by at Southern Cross Station to cover overloads or unplanned disruptions.
