Free travel for Veterans and War Widows during the 2024 Remembrance Day

Victorian Veterans, War Widows and current defence force members are eligible for free travel on public transport across the state on Remembrance Day, Monday 11 November 2024.

In addition, free travel is extended to school students, Scouts, Guides, Australian Defence Force Cadets, and band members in uniform traveling to commemoration events.

How to Access Free Travel

Eligible customers simply need to present their DVA gold or white card, category V Victorian public transport concession card, or Veterans Card Victoria card in the Service Victoria app when using public transport. Alternatively, you can wear your uniform, service medals, ex-service association or returned from active service or War Widows badge.

Holders of Veterans Concession myki, EDA/TPI or War Veterans/War Widow Free Travel Pass can touch on and off as usual. myki fares won’t be charged during this period.

Coverage and V/Line Seat Reservations

Free travel during this period covers all public transport in Victoria, including:

  • Melbourne’s trains, trams and buses
  • Regional trains, coaches and buses (including regional town buses and inter-town buses)

Please note that some private bus operators, airport services, and privately operated tourist trains and buses are excluded from this offer.

Seat reservations are recommended on all long-distance V/Line rail services and some coach services.

Traffic and Public Transport Changes for Commemoration Events

Ballarat:

  • Sturt Street will be closed between Dawson Street and Raglan Street in both directions from 8.00am to 12.30pm.
  • Ballarat bus routes 11, 24, 25, 26, and the V/Line coach "Melbourne – Nhill via Ballarat" will be diverted via Dana Street and Mair Street.
  • Passengers may use the following bus stops at:
    • Old Fire Station/Sturt Street
    • Doveton Street/Sturt Street
  • The bus stop at St Patricks Cathedral/Sturt Street will be closed. Passengers may instead use the bus stops at:
    • Ballarat Base Hospital/Sturt Street
    • Central Square Shopping Centre/Sturt Street

Warragul:

  • Victoria Street (between Palmerston Street and Queen Street) and Smith Street (between Queen Street and Palmerston Street) will be closed from 9.30am to 11.30am.
  • Regional bus routes 81, 82, 83, and 85 departing from Warragul Station will be diverted via Napier Street. Bus stops and services will remain unaffected, and services will run on their regular schedules.
  • There is no impact on public transport during the Warragul Remembrance Day event.

Neerim South:

  • Temporary traffic holds will be in place on Main Neerim Road and Neerim East Road between the Cenotaph and Wagner Road from approximately 10.30am to 11.30am.
  • Route 89, departing Warragul Station at 10.20am to Noojee will be diverted via Railway Road, Queen Street, and Neerim East Road.
  • The bus stop at the Post Office will be temporarily closed during the event. A replacement stop will be located at Algie Hall (approximately 275m from the original stop).
