Wangaratta bus trial

We're testing new ways to pay in Wangaratta. Share your feedback by completing a survey.

We’re testing tap and go payments on local buses in Wangaratta.

You can now tap on with Mastercard or Visa with credit card, debit card, phone or smartwatch for full fare bus rides. Or continue to pay with cash if you prefer.

The trial is for full fare passengers. You’ll only ever be charged $2.80 for 2 hours or $5.60 daily. Use the same card or device each time you board and tap on.

If you’re a concession passenger or continuing your journey on V/Line train or coach, don’t participate in the trial and pay for your ticket as normal.

This trial is part of our testing program for the myki upgrades. Your feedback is important – if you have participated in the Wangaratta bus trial, please complete this survey to share feedback on your experience.

New ticketing features will be tested, refined and gradually rolled out once we’re certain they meet passengers’ needs.

If you don’t want to take part, you are a concession holder, or you are continuing your travel with V/Line, buy your ticket with cash as normal.

Any Australian-issued Mastercard or Visa can be used. You can use a physical credit or debit card or your digital wallet on your smartphone or smartwatch, including Apple devices.

myki cards, V/Line tickets (including E-tickets), American Express and card schemes other than Mastercard or Visa, international-issued cards, pre-paid or gift cards cannot be used.

Make sure you tap on with a single card, phone or smartwatch. Your tap won’t be accepted if the reader detects more than one card or device, for example, if you present your phone with a card stored inside the case.

No. You should use the same card or device to ensure you are not charged more than the daily fare cap.

For example, if you start your journey using your smartphone, do not switch to a physical card, even if the card is linked to the same account.

You will be charged the standard 2 hour fare of $2.80. You won’t be charged again if you accidentally tap off or tap again within 2 hours.

You will incur an additional charge if you tap after 2 hours but charges are capped, as normal, at the $5.60 daily fare cap.

The transaction will be described on your bank statement as ‘myki Travel Trial Tap Victoria’.

For queries about fares you’ve been charged as part of the trial, contact PTV on 1800 800 007 (6am to midnight daily and all night on Friday and Saturday.)

Payments are anonymous and PTV does not get any bank account details or personal data as part of the transaction. Your details are securely held by your bank.

The ticketing technology is used in more than 25 countries and has bank-grade security protection. It has been verified and certified to all applicable standards to ensure safe and secure payments.

We’re testing a few things, including installation of new readers, staff training and operations, use of tap and go payments and back-office and financial reconciliation processes.

What we learn will prepare us for future trials and the progressive rollout of new ticketing features.

We’re busy working with the supplier to make sure the new ticket readers are compatible with current myki cards and Mobile myki.

This will allow us to start testing and installing new readers in the myki network with no disruptions to travel. Victorians will start to see the new readers when testing is complete.
