We’re testing new trains

We’re testing new trains for Melbourne’s metropolitan network, ensuring passenger safety and reliability before they join the network.

During testing, buses will replace trains at night on the Werribee Line. Buses will replace trains from 8:30pm to last service every night, Sunday to Thursday; from 10:30pm to 5am every Friday night; and from 10:30pm to 6am every Saturday night.

Testing is a vital step before these trains hit the network. Each train undergoes hundreds of tests under a range of scenarios and conditions, making sure they are safe, reliable and ready to take passengers.

We know these disruptions are inconvenient, so we’re only conducting testing at night. We’re running a range of bus services to reduce the impact on your journey and help you get where you need as quickly as possible.

These new trains will help us retire our longest-serving fleets and create a more efficient, accessible and reliable network.

Additional travel support and information

Car park and pedestrian access

Station car park closures and on-street parking changes may be required at times to make room for buses replacing trains. Access to station precincts and shared use paths will remain available at all times for pedestrians.

Bus replacements

For the safety and comfort of all passengers, there are restrictions on what you may take with you on buses.

You cannot:

  • take a conventional bike on a bus or tram (only folding bikes that meet the size criteria)
  • take an animal on a bus unless it is in a suitable container
    • exceptions apply for assistance dogs
  • take a surfboard.

For further information, see Luggage, Bikes and Animals.

Accessibility

Wheelchair Accessible Taxis are available and most train replacement buses will be low-floor models to assist passengers. Please speak to the customer service staff at your replacement bus stop or station staff. You can also contact PTV prior to your travel on 1800 800 007.
