We’re revitalising Melbourne’s tram power network to meet the city’s future transport needs and increased demands. We are adding greater capacity to provide more services and reliability for passengers.

The new substation at 816 Plenty Road, Reservoir is being finalised and will replace the existing substation. The new substation will support the new E-Class trams on Route 86 and ensure there is enough power to keep the network operating smoothly, reliably and safely.

What's happening?

  • Works on the Reservoir substation is being completed in four stages. The works commenced in August 2023. We have completed two stages so far.

    1. Stage 1. Early service installation and site mobilisation: August 2023 - Complete
    2. Stage 2. Construction of the new substation and installation of equipment: August 2023 to June 2024 - Complete
    3. Stage 3. Testing and commissioning: October 2024
    4. Stage 4. Demolition of existing substation: December 2024 to January 2025.

What's next?

Works in the final stages will occur between:

  • 7am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.
  • 7am to 3pm, Saturday.
