Creating more ways to move around Melbourne

Benefits for all Victorians: new connections and more choice

Better connections

The Metro Tunnel will mean more ways to move around Melbourne.

All Victorians including regional passengers will have access to Parkville’s world-class hospitals and university by train for the first time at Parkville Station.

They will also be able to get to important Melbourne landmarks including the Shrine of Remembrance and the Royal Botanic Gardens as well as St Kilda Road’s employment hub by train from Anzac Station.

Cranbourne, Pakenham, Sunbury lines

The Cranbourne, Pakenham and Sunbury lines will be taken out of the City Loop, running instead through the Metro Tunnel and its five new state-of-the-art stations.

Regional Lines

Regional passengers will access the Metro Tunnel stations by transferring to the Sunbury or Cranbourne/Pakenham lines.

Project overview

Meet your new stations

The Metro Tunnel will double the size of Melbourne’s underground rail network as we move towards becoming Australian’s biggest city.

By creating a second rail line under the city, the Metro tunnel will ease congestion in the City Loop for more reliable services on other lines.

The new stations are:

  • Arden Station in North Melbourne
  • Parkville Station in Parkville
  • State Library Station in the CBD
  • Town Hall Station in the CBD
  • Anzac Station on St Kilda Road

Interchange stations between City Loop and Metro Tunnel

The Metro Tunnel and City Loop will connect at two key CBD locations – between Flinders Street Station and the new town Hall Station, and between Melbourne Central Station and the new State Library Station.

Connections between these stations will mean passengers on all metropolitan lines can interchange without having to touch on and off.
